The small town of Fostoria, Ohio has a total area of about 8 square miles, yet it spans three separate counties. It is uniquely situated where Wood, Hancock, and Seneca Counties converge. The city was created in 1854 after merging the two former communities of Rome and Risdon. Fostoria is named after Charles Foster Sr., who donated land in the merger. Foster’s son, Charles Foster Jr., later became the 35th Governor of Ohio and served as the US Secretary of the Treasury under President Benjamin Harrison.
Railroads have long been an important industry for Fostoria. The city sits at the junction of multiple rail lines, which played a significant role in its development. In 2013, The Fostoria Railroad Preservation Society completed its Iron Triangle Rail Park, an elevated observation platform that offers a unique vantage point to observe the numerous trains passing through the city. Fostoria is one of the busiest freight train locations in the country with more than 100 freight trains traveling through the city each day. This has made the Fostoria Rail Park a popular destination for train-watchers from all around the country and beyond.
