Roughly 3 decades after it was first settled, Bowling Green, Ohio became the seat of Wood County in the 1860s. It's named after Bowling Green, Kentucky and was officially given city status in 1901.
The area is well known for its educational and green energy initiatives. The turbines located along U.S. Route 6 became the first utility-sized wind farm in Ohio in the early 2000s. Bowling Green also has the largest solar field in the state. Roughly 40% of the energy delivered by city utilities comes from a renewable source. In December, Bowling Green State University received Princeton Review's "green college" designation for the 9th time. The university was also awarded a Collegiate Purple Star last month based on its support and resources for students with military backgrounds.
